Your logic is perpetuating or at the very least implying what the majority of the left hates which is low hanging fruit for the right to latch on to.

Even the left does not mostly want to ban all guns. So the idea of getting the left and the right to ban them isn't going to happen. The right wing narrative on Fox and Twitter that most of the left wants to ban all guns or wants to go door to door to take your guns is simply not true.

So yes, a more realistic approach is to come up with laws that make it more difficult for deranged lunatics to shoot up a place.
