Well, the thing that actually gives it that poop smell is sulfur compounds and e-coli, and yeah, most likely the reason it smells so bad is to help you know to not fucking eat it or have it on you. Carnivore shit tends to smell worse than herbivore because A) more sulfur and ammonia in their diets because of how accumulation works and B) less efficient digestions. Its also possible that you smell it stronger to help you keep away from areas with shit that eats you and which is less good for you to eat, but this is speculation. That said, making other animals like your poop is a valid strategy, especially for predators, which is why virtually every cat carries toxoplasmosis, which can make infected rodents more attracted to the smell of cat urine and poop.
