They have the grocery store. They decided the groceries are not going to sell and/or it's not cost effective to keep selling them. So they announce "tomorrow is the last day you can buy these groceries".

People say "please no, we want to keep buying them", but nintendo says "no".

Then they take their groceries and take them to the dump. They're now in the dumpster, unbuyable. But some people actually began dumpster diving - at this point, these groceries are unsellable - , so nintendo pays a lot of money to someone to develop some poison to make the now-dumped groceries toxic.

It's a d**** move, simply.

I hope you realize your comparison is an apt one but not for the reason you were posting with it.

Grocery stores/dumps are indeed supposed to stop people from dumpster diving. There's a reason dumps are usually gated, fenced, and secured facilities.
