I guess for me the part that makes it feel like "autism blackface" is that the conceit of the show at the outset is that the character strongly incorporates the savant aspect of media portrayals of autism and also at times extremely debilitatingly inhibited by it, which means that both aspects of his character are ramped up and heightened.
