Students don't have the right to retaliate to consequences for their behavior. The students are 100% in the wrong and you have failed to provide literally any evidence that the teacher has assaulted a student. Your argument is fundamentally flawed because the confiscation of a device is not an assault.
You probably think it's illegal imprisonment when a misbehaving kid is grounded against their will.

Also the whole "Just give them an instant fail if they use their phone but don't confiscate it" can fly for university and college, but these are still kids in school. They're not fully developed adults yet. You can't just give up on them that easy, you have take on a bit more of a parental like role
And the fact the confiscation of a device is an acceptable middle step before involving the principle and parents and removing them entirely from the class like what Grem thinks should be step 1 and the perfect solution to all problems.
