He definitely used to be different. I don't know if he became a worse person or just became worse at hiding what a bad person he is... probably a combination of both, but more the second one.

I think he probably did and still does want to save the planet, though it seems to be less about actually caring about everyone else and more about a savior complex where he has convinced himself that he is this brilliant visionary who will save all of humanity. Again, I would guess he's always been kind of like this but financial success has made him worse.

As to why he changed, it was likely a combination of him getting arrogant off of his own success, and surrounding himself with yes men who tell him all his worst ideas are genius.

There's an article from over a decade ago from his ex-wife that makes it obvious he has always been like it.

I think it's more that we used to assume wealthy and successful people were highly intelligent until social media gave them a lot more chances to prove that assumption wrong.
