The fact that it isn't some legend that sprung up hundreds to thousands of years later is evidence, as the story of a Jewish man named Jesus who was crucified in Jerusalem on behest of the Roman authority of the city could simply be contradicted by everyone who lived there at the time. I know we're supposed to think ancient peoples were morons, but really. It's a preposterous occam's razor reversion to doubt the existence of a dudebro religious nutter who got so bothersome to the authorities of the time that they got rid of him. rather people at the time invented a contemporary story that that totes did happen, for reals, and decided to believe in it as world-view shaping religious doctrine.
