I like how they all had really specialized jobs and the second they get on the planet they're like "who the **** cares let's just do whatever".

Yeah, the thing I remember most about the cast was that almost all of them were morons.
Cartographer guy has invented devices that maps a cave; gets lost in cave anyhow.
Alien snake creature hisses menacingly; biologist gets closer as he says "aaawww, it's soo cuuuute".
These are just two of a team of "bright minds" who agreed to go on a multi-year space mission before even knowing what the mission was all about.

My little head canon is that most of the team consisted not of bright minded scientists, but of opportunistic con men on the lam and with massive debts to their name, and so were more than happy to disappear off the Earth for a few years and earn huge bucks in the process. The average scientists would've seen (and declined) the offer of going to space for many years with details given only once the contract is signed, and so naturally, the offer only attracted the desperate and foolish.
