I work in a restaurant as part of the kitchen crew, and when I asked a friend whos part of the waitstaff why they dont just get paid an hourly wage like us folks in the kitchen, she looked at me as if I had grown two heads before telling me how they actually like getting tips even though theyre not guaranteed a good paycheck if the business is slow on a particular day since they would make a whole lot less if they were simply wagies like us in the back.

The Idea is, for front of the house, You can get your ass kicked all day, but at the end of the day you will be paid for it. If things are slow you might get to go home early if you want to.

In retail you could get your ass kicked every shift and never make a dime more.
