I'm sure they do. My childhood cat shiloh absolutely did after I moved out.

agree. I moved out and then later my parents and brother moved an hour away (with 2 cats). They recognized me each time I visited (every few weeks to few months) while they were still alive, including my favorite cat who jumped up gingerly for a hug the last time I got to see him when he was frail and suffering from a thyroid issue that would end up taking him just a few weeks later. When he was a kitten, the first day we had him, I was basically on "watch them in their new environment and make sure they stay safe" duty and he looked up me on my parents' porch and meowed until I picked him up and he was really content. That was the strongest pet bond I've ever experienced and from that moment on, he was my favorite. My parents' other cat (his sister) once got out at night (both were indoor cats) and got attacked by a neighborhood cat. He was a but derpy at that point. He had a traumatic experience where my brother (only a little kid at the time) had restrained him unintentially agressively, and we had to take him to an animal hospital. Brain damage was suspected and he was a bit... off... after that... but he knew she was outside and in trouble and he knew I was the only one awake at the time. He got my attention and led me to the door and I was like "okay wtf is going on lol" and as soon as I opened it, she bolted inside from under the adjacent porch. I was like "holy fuck..." He knew. Sometimes kids know to call 911 and in doing so become heros. In this case, a cat did the cat equivalent of that. Sometimes he seemed like he wasn't all there, but when it mattered, he knew things I didn't. Best cat ever. And I named him Ike after the South Park character. He's been gone like 15 years now but I still dream about him once in a while. Almost took my eye out once too (had it coming, ill-advised "peek a boo" with a kitten, got my eyelid good but didn't go all the way through). He was a really fucking weird cat but he was the best.
