I would be overwhelming by the horror of being chased by Mr X or what have you if I couldn't pause the game to recollect myself. But being able to pause whenever and regularly breaks the immersion and let's me gather my composure. That also holds true for a boss fight. There have been plenty of games I have paused boss fights to compose myself. Break the immersion and recalibrate. Fuck a pause button in a From game.
