I'm not acquainted with the stage play or the silent film version, but the animated movie
is implied to all be a dream. Peter Pan doesn't show up until Wendy goes to bed. Later, when the children return from Neverland, Wendy is asleep at the window whereas her two brothers are tucked in their beds where their parents left them. She's the only one who wakes up and recounts what happened because it was her dream.Of course, they had a sequel which later showed that the events did happen, but that wasn't until nearly half a century later. With the events of the film actually taking place in this continuity, there's reason for Wendy to imagine her irate father as the villainous Captain Hook.
