When i joined a gym years ago, the first thing one of the trainers told me (in his opinion), 'weight loss is 70% diet, 30% exercise' and i honestly believe in it all these years later.
Nearly 10 years of going to the gym regularly, and I still don't have the body I feel I should have, and it's because of my diet. I'm not fat, but I'm not skinnier. I've got muscle, but don't have a high definition.
