Because that's what our parents, our teachers, our principals, our advisors, and basically every adult from the previous generation drilled into our young minds since day one. If I had a nickel for every time I was told "you need to get a college degree or your life is essentially worthless" while growing up, then I'd probably have enough nickels to pay off a good chunk of my college debt. A process that will leave someone tens of thousands of dollars in debt potentially for decades shouldn't be thrust onto high-schoolers who barely even fully understand their current lives.

But you can almost always go to a different cheaper college. The degree is what matters!
