i dont know what im missing here, but how do you just buy a watch for $22k in a market where it's worth 65k? why not sell this one for a cool 40k profit, buy another one, and walk away 20k richer?

I dont know if his watch is truly worth 65k, but I can confirm that a watch being worth more in the market than new is a thing, but I see it happen more often with Rolex, some rare special editions (such as the omega speed master snoopy edition) and, believe it or not, the OmegaXSwatch moonswatch.

its because of artificial scarcity. Say you want to buy a Rolex Daytona and got all that money in your hand and walk to a Rolex dealership: they wont sell you the watch!!! You basically have to be an established rolex buyer so they will sell it to you, meaning that you have purchased other Rolexes before.

special editions are rare, so on top of that that explains the added value. Ditto for the moonswatch.

its sort of like a 1957 t-bird, its an expensive car now due to desirability.
