I went through both of these and looking back they had a lot in common. Here are the facts.

-They are Devil May Cry games. This is the obvious one. If you turn the 2 round it looks like a 5. They're even on PS2 and PS5 respectively.
-They have the same gameplay. In both games most of the enemies cannot fight back. Dante's guns in DMC5 and Dante's Dr Faust in DMC5 let you beat anything by just standing there and firing. In 5 sometimes the Furies get the jump on you despite this and in 2 sometimes you can get piled by evil goats.
-Dante has a bunch of other moves and options that are just kinda there in both. In DMC2 Dante has a bunch of customisation options that affect your DT which takes forever to build anyway. In DMC5 Dante has a bunch of interchangeable weak weapons that just keep the style meter up in between bursts of SDT.
-Dante is boring in both of them. In 2 Dante is feeling kind of down because he lost Vergil. In 5 Dante is feeling perturbed because Vergil has returned.
-Dante has a bike in both. Dante rides a bike at the end of 2. In 5 he makes a bike and rides it to the end.
-Majin/Sin DT are pretty samey. These are pretty much the same thing, except DMC2 wants you to let your health deplete before you get your win button while DMC5 wants you to hold LB for a while before it becomes the win button.
-Both have really dumb humanoid villains that I kind of get a kick out of. Arius is really funny with his screeching and King? Yeah, here's your crown is the high point of the franchise. Vergil is pretty funny in a morbidly fascinating kind of way. He's like that middle sized sheep from that one Simpsons scene that gets pushed out of the way because it doesn't understand that it's been upstaged.
-Both have playable characters created by the main villain. V was invented by Vergil and Lucia was founded by Arius.
-Both games reuse DMC1 bosses. DMC2 has Phantom, DMC5 has Griffon and Nightmare.
-Both have a main villain that reuses things from previous bosses. Urizen uses Goliath, Artemis and Geryon's moves. Argosax was literally previous bosses taped together.
-Both have two discs. DMC2 was released with a Dante disc and a Lucia disc. DMC5 has the regular DMC5 and then the DMC5 special edition, although they make you pay for that one while DMC2 was nice enough to let you have both in one box. That's games nowadays for you I guess...
-Both end with Dante going to the demon world.
-Trismagia and King Cerberus are pretty much the same thing. They are, look at em. Oranguerra and Goliath are the same too.

Another theory is that DMC5 is deliberately imitating DMC2. If DMC4 was Nero's DMC1, then DMC5 being the game Nero becomes monstrously OP and kinda meh at the same time just like Dante did in DMC2 makes sense.
Since Vergil got to return I think this means we might see Arius in DMC6.
