Just having Joel fighting waves and wave of infected and raiders on the show would just have it turn into a Rambo movie.

You can't have the TV show be the 1:1 adaptation of the video game, because we can't just have 10 episodes of "Kill a dozen or so things, find supplies and heal, walk to the next spot, kill another dozen or so thing, find supplies and heal, rinse/repeat. Oh, and move a board or ladder every so often".

As simple as it sounds, the show is basically just the cutscenes from the game, not the gameplay. We didn't need 8 episodes of Joel fighting clickers and raiders to reflect how dangerous this world is.
