I am not familiar with this expression. I love it, but I might need to workshop it a little (a fallen tree is the ideal one to take wood from). Perhaps "take wood out of a falling tree", though that implies Willis is falling. "Take wood out of an ailing tree" may be too on the nose, though both more apt and sensitive to the situation at hand.
Have you ever tried to do anything with wood directly from a live tree?

Its pretty hard to use for anything because its still wet. You cant even burn live limbs you pull from a tree until the fire dries it out.

Fallen trees are perfect.
