I guess that would be a countermeasure to having two people named the same name.

The antagonist also uses this later on by introducing himself with a fake name that he shares with a famous pop star. Light notes that he can't even risk trying this name to see if it'll work because the pop star's face might pop into his head and he'd kill the wrong person.
