How did NATO even get to where it is today if allowing a new member requires a unanimous vote? And why would anyone think that such a requirement was a good idea anyway? A two-thirds majority, sure. But at this point it's becoming near-impossible to allow other countries to join, as one country or another will always find some reason to cockblock them.
Allowing entry of new members requires the existing ones to potentially go to war on their behalf. It's reasonable for everyone to have veto powers.
