so, I do think the games tend to be hyper-individualistic:
-the NPCs are generally pretty shallow because you have to build so many of them
-the player character is generally more of an observer of communities rather than being subject to them

they definitely tend to recreate the myths of Manifest Destiny and Great Man Theory.

I'm not sure if those are inherent to the genre or not, but they're certainly really prevalent in the games that actually get created
