Buy one of these: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PJPHEBO/ ($11)

And then buy this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.prowl.torque ($5)

For $16 you can scan your engine codes and get all kinds of diagnostic data.

Loved Torque so much when I used it. That said, I was worried about the battery in the spare phone I was using it was overheating and caching fire (since I had it mounted on my dash so I could see the gauges), so I eventually ditched that setup and replaced it with this (it was worth it for the shift lights alone):

It does almost everything Torque does except it looks nicer than mounting your phone. That said, if you only care about trouble codes and don't need the additional gauges, you'll be fine with the $15 OBD-II BT adapter and the free version of Torque.

EDIT: A pic of it in my car to give you a sense of scale (it's much easier to read IRL, and yes I need a car wash)

And no, my CEL isn't on. The car was in accessory mode when I took the pic.
