I'm still in the learning phase.

First real PC I've ever owned (last computer was an Intel Pentium D *lol*) and it's only been like two weeks now after replacing the broken RAM cards that were causing troubles.

So this is all completely new to me.

In a nutshell:

Your monitor will have a refresh rate, which is how many times a second your screen will draw the image you see ie. 60Hz means your monitor will display 60 frames per second (FPS). Now some higher end monitors support multiple refresh rates. Mine, for instance, has a maximum refresh rate of 165Hz at 1440p, or 165 FPS. I usually set it for 120 to match my second monitor, a TV I sometimes use for gaming on.

Now if my GPU outputs the game I'm playing faster than 120 FPS I sometimes get screen tearing. I can either set my monitor to a faster refresh rate (up to 165Hz) or I can limit my GPU's output via the nVidia control panel. I have a FPS limit set to 117 FPS and have G-SYNC enabled (my monitor is a G-SYNC monitor). This effectively eliminates screen tearing as my GPU will never exceed my monitors refresh rate, and G-SYNC eliminates stuttering for when my GPU drops below the monitors refresh rate.
