Why would they leave their aunt's house? Because of a fight, seriously? At least she had food, no? If she did, then the boy was wrong to put her sister in that situation

They were kids and the main character overestimated his wherewithal. All there really was to it. Part of the tragedy was that while a huge amount of their circumstances were entirely out of their control, but some of their problems were his fault. And as a result, his younger sister who was way too young to have any agency got caught up by that as well.

People sometimes make bad decisions in horrible situations that compound their problems.
