I mean the point isn't to gently prod you it's to grab your attention
A simple banner in the top 33-50% of an article is enough to grab my attention.

Making something 150-175% the size of the visible page isn't attention grabbing. It's attention hostile. It turns into the equivalent of a cookie pop-up, or subscription newsletter bullshit. It doesn't make me want to do the thing, it makes me want to nuke your shit out of my way.

If you're going to pester people to do anything, you should do it in a calculated manner after they've had the opportunity to consume some of the content they want.

If I walked into McDonald's and I got jumped at the door by an employee pestering me to please try and buy a Big Mac, I'd fucking leave before buying anything. Whereas if I've had time to browse the menu and then at the register they ask, it's different and not devestatingly frustrating and annoying. Even in the drive-thru, you at least get the perceived opportunity to see the menu before they blast off some promotion.
