This is what happened to Bethesda. Sony attempted to pay them for like 6 months timed exclusivity for Starfield and Microsoft's response was to buy the company. I think they just bought them because both companies were seeing their overall value dropping and selling themselves to a company like Microsoft who are aggressively spending money in gaming was an easy solution to that problem.
