I would buy every house in a neighborhood and rent a house in the middle for cheap to a family.

Then see how long it took them to figure out they were all alone in the neighborhood.

I'd go a step further and hire people to, in plain clothes, go and tend to the houses in the morning/evening when they're likely to be seen and see how long it takes the family to figure out nobody actually lives in the houses overnight
