Sorry, I should explain further but it's tl;dr. My 2020 tax returns were sorta complicated due to unemployment, a PPP program, and an inheritance I received when my grandmother died that was taxable for some reason. I was intimidated by it, so I went to my boss (a CPA who does tax returns professionally) and asked for some help. The initial return was apparently too early and they did some kinda adjustment to unemployment that necessitated an amended return.

Everything was fine for a couple years until this summer (around a month before the check), when they sent me a letter saying that the tax return was wrong. It was worded kinda confusingly and I had no idea what they were talking about, so I brought it to the person who did the return. She reassured me that the IRS was in error and that the return was correct (and that the amended return had fixed the issue they were talking about), and gave me a letter to send back informing them of such. I did, and they sent me that check for $2,554.41 with no further explanation. Just a check. Obviously I was even more confused than before at this point, so I again brought it to the accountant. She was as confused as me, but kinda just shrugged and told me to deposit it. So I did. I figured the worst they could do is ask for it back if it was in fact an error, so it's just been sitting there waiting in case. Lesson learned I guess, I didn't think they would charge me for their mistake.

They hoping you won't lawyer. It is why they target the poor.
