Yeah follow your heart. It'll most likely not land you on the Golden route. There are at least 2 parts I can think of where you have to do something pretty counterintuitive to get to the Golden route. I would not consider this a "true" ending as it's really up to the player to decide which is the best

The story is pretty lengthy, and it's also up to you to do the other routes. NG+s also scale the stages to your units, so it's more like a continuation than starting a new game.

If you're not that good at SRPGs, the middle difficulty is probably a very good sweet spot. Some people don't like the highest difficulty due to how weak your units might feel. Just play a difficulty that feels right for you. I believe you can change it but it's been a while since I played it, and I never changed difficulty in my own playthrough
