Yeah, it's weird that he tied this era with the 80s and the 50s, when the early 30s completely suppressed creativity.Both the Screwball comedy and Noir thriller came to prominence while the Hays Code was in effect. I wouldn't say things were completely stifled with the studio system at its height and stars that we still regard today flourishing in spite of the restrictions. I think the Hays Code deserved the scrutiny of the time but this idea modern notion that it resulted in a Puritanical reinvention of Hollywood couldn't be further from the truth.
