Been down this road. It's not an uncommon situation for gay men to encounter at least once. Broke up with an ex on what I felt was good terms once "they" started seriously considering transitioning after a year of being together. We agreed that the changes my ex wanted to undergo were understandably going to be a dealbreaker for both of us. "She" just felt like asking if there was a possibility I could still be on board with it as an intimate partner. I gently, but firmly said no and that I was still open to being friends. My ex said she understood and apologized for "flipping the game board" while we had already spent so much time having fun together.

Initially we seemed mutually comfortable with our relationship as gay men, but my ex's trans journey was unprecedented for me after so much investment. She admitted realizing this as someone who formerly identified as a gay man and bore no grudge over my rejection. She just felt it was worth a shot to ask. Most (anatomically male) gay men say no to the proposition, because we ideally want anatomically male partners.

We still touch base with each other on social media, but we've naturally grown apart over the separation and I'm glad to hear my ex is living more comfortably as a woman. I think I handled the news pretty well compared to a lot of other awkward breakups I've heard about. I didn't want my ex to be another horror story to gossip about. I was disappointed, but felt no resentment. She just wanted to go down a different path I wasn't interested in following. People break up over less.
