Wow, nice write up. Thanks.

I never got into Magic (the amount of cards was intimidating), but the game has always looked really cool and interesting. I feel sorry for the diehard fans who probably are addicted to card collecting and will be exploited by that $1000 cost.
Frankly I wouldn't worry too much about the product as far as that is concerned. It really isn't something that anyone but scalpers/content creators are interested in because they just aren't real cards. I have known pretty insane collectors over my time with the game and I still don't know a single person that is going to go after that for even a single pack, it's so bad. For perspective, there are chase lands in the original set but because of the utterly nonsense price of the product it's actually cheaper to buy a real version of the card than the fake one (at least for the time being... I suspect once the flippers find that no one is buying they'll be forced into dropping their prices a lot).

And don't worry about the # of cards when it comes to MtG. If anything MtG is the only actually accessible one for a newer player out of the long standing games. MtG "phases out" cards to keep a constantly rotating "Standard" set which means that people with enormous collections really aren't that far ahead of someone who just started recently. Obviously the skill gap is real but that's sort of how it goes. There are additional formats that allow for older cards to come into play (arguably the most popular format in the game, Commander, allows for basically every card ever printed to be used) which means that cards can stick around for a long time in terms of usability. This is as opposed to, say, YGO where there is just one "everything goes" format as the main one and a bunch of nostalgia ones where it's just "YGO was best this year, so everything here and before is legal."
