You send him out once and he's in his normal dolphin form, then you switch him out and bring him back into the same battle later and he "transforms" into his bulkier form that has insanely high stats for a non-legendary Pokemon. It's basically like Clark Kent arriving on the scene, seeing some shit going down, hiding somewhere, then coming back as Superman to save the day.
