Tactics Ogre is back bayyybeeeee....and by that I mean a rebalanced HD Remaster of that PSP version which was already a remake of the PS1 version which was already an enhanced port of the Super Famicom version. We got an 87 through 18 reviews thus far. While it was Final Fantasy Tactics that may have popularized SRPGs, this is the game that I still consider to be the gold standard of the genre. This version rebalances classes and combat system so they can be more viable and the story is now fully voice acted. The smoothing over of the graphics is a bit more of a miss, but if they bother you can just turn it off and go for the raw pixels (which I would have done anyway)

VG247 - 10/10
In a world where we've seen Square Enix fall down with remasters (examples include the lacklustre Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters and the egregious Kingdom Hearts on Switch), Tactics Ogre: Reborn highlights something special a change of the guard, so to speak, that bodes remarkably well for the rest of the publisher's classic RPG oeuvre.

RPG Fan - 9.5/10
Tactics Ogre: Reborn is hugely successful in its goals to modernise an admittedly old game. I am impressed on quite a deep level; having played these games for nearly 25 years, its a pleasant surprise to see Square Enix putting so much delicate attention into every facet. Think of it like an old house. It needed dusting; it has original period features that require a specific wood stain, so it doesnt rot. Square Enix has given this house a thorough renovation, using the correct tools for every job and restoring the lustre you remember it having when you were young(er). In the context of this game, its a big victory, but it also makes me wish theyd put so much effort into other recent remasters.

Twinfinite - 4.5/5
Tactics Ogre: Reborn is exactly what fans could have wanted from a remaster. Though not all of its changes improve the experience, the majority are welcome improvements that help elevate the experience to a new level. This is a must-play for fans of the original, and easily the best possible point of entry for newcomers who want to get into the series.

Digitally Downloaded - 4.5/5
Tactics Ogre Reborn is the essence of one of video games true masterpieces. On this, the second remake, it has proven that it is functionally timeless, both in terms of storytelling and the quality of play. There werent many tactics JRPGs around before Tactics Ogre, and those that were largely looked to Fire Emblem for inspiration. Now, though, the isometric combat system that so many tactics JRPGs use these days was inspired directly by two classics this one, and Final Fantasy Tactics. We have a lot to thank Tactics Ogre for, and Reborn demonstrates just how playable it still is.

Worth Playing - 9/10
Tactics Ogre: Reborn is an incredibly well put together remaster of one of the cult classics from the SNES era. It's an improvement over the well-done PSP remaster and improves upon it in almost every way. The story and translation remain excellent, and the core gameplay is more fun than ever. The only downside is that it didn't get any visual touch-ups, so you'll need to be willing to accept cute, pudgy little sprites acting out the serious tense political drama. If you're a fan of strategy RPGs and haven't played Tactics Ogre yet, then Reborn is well worth a shot.

Gamespot - 8/10
Tactics Ogre's intense tactical combat, in-depth character-building, and excellent storytelling makes it a must-play for strategy-RPG fans. It's wonderful that this game is much more widely available now, and most of the updates and upgrades make the package even better. While some might balk at the $50 price tag for a remake with an iffy graphical and sound overhaul, the superb strategy gameplay and branching story paths will keep your attention for a very long time. While it might not be a perfect remake, it's a damn good one.

Shacknews - 8/10
Tactics Ogre: Reborn is a treasure of both classic tactical RPG design and modern sensibilities. I really like the quality-of-life features that make it so much easier to play and stay on the path of the story without much padding. I can also appreciate that this game also contains some tough-as-nails challenges that take an incredible amount of dedication to overcome. In between all that, its also just a great story and I really appreciate the Chariot Tarot system allowing you to see the paths untaken at any point you desire. If you want a great tactical RPG, this is not only the forerunner to many favorites, its also well-polished for a new generation.

Inverse - 7/10
For all its murky mechanics and slow pace, Tactics Ogre: Reborn still blends satisfying combat with a top-tier story in a way that few games can match. If youre a fan of the tactical RPG genre and want a serious challenge, theres simply no reason not to play this game. But newcomers may want to start with something more approachable, or at least keep waiting for that Final Fantasy Tactics remake were all hoping for.
