I don't understand the logic here. Most people are not compatible. To find someone compatible enough to have a relationship is rare. Therefore, it makes more sense to get back together with a compatible person than to waste all the time, money, and effort going through a whole bunch of less compatible people.

That's why it's the comfortable option. You're already familiar with your ex, so it makes you want to just lean back into that, rather than deal with the uncomfortable part of getting to know new people.

I broke up with my girlfriend of 10 years, because I could no longer trust her. Keeping her would have been the comfortable option.

But finding someone new that's interested in you, is usually easier than convincing an ex to take you back. Like, while I don't hate my ex, there is nothing on earth that would convince me to date her again.
