I like the energy in the second half but the song is a bit too short for me to really get into it. Maybe that's for the best. Either way, solid track but I'll probably forget about it by the time I wake up in the morning. Janus (10/16): I like the flute : ) Haste (8/16): New Ranking: 8.6 (8th place) Rank the Retirees: 8.9/10 (51st place) Ah, the king of kings, the lord of lords, as far as recognition and respect among vgm. Ive known this theme since I purchased Chrono Cross clear back in 1999. (I never got very far in the game shame on me) There are one or two CC tracks Id take over this one, but its solid! Nobody can deny that. The delicate atmosphere in the first half is wonderful it takes you to a new world. (fretless bass is one of my favorite basses) I like the soft sus2 chords the way they add to the harmonies at the start such a Mitsuda thing. The low guitar lines (5ths and 2nds) are again, so very Mitsuda! The flute melody is so pretty because I love the way it uses Dorian, and when it gets to that contrasting bII chord at 0:34 it fills me with joy! And the transition into the upbeat dance is, well, flawless. Celtic violin fiddling is really fun. Gotta love those triplet ornaments in the melody here, too. Overall I love this music! But it doesnt do anything super amazing, and so it fails to reach the Amazing tier lem (8/16): The fact that my first 9/10 song in the rankings is right in the middle at number 8 shows how much I love a lot of these champions! I'm not sure how many, if any, Yasunori Mitsuda songs I like more than Scars of Time. It's just a really great song all around, especially from 0:58 onwards after the intro. The instrumentation from the violins and the guitar just comes together really well. andy (5/16): Ah, the classic of classics. Honestly the first 45 secs aren't all that exciting on their own, but it's all a set-up for what comes next. Then it nails a perfect mix of sadstrings and high energy beats to create something special. When I was younger I often watched a concert medley on youtube that combined Scars with Frog's Theme and Far Away Times and now I can't hear this one alone without thinking it sounds unfinished lol. Turns out it's still up, here it is if anyone wants to give it a listen! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NITRZK8z0ek&t=232s azuarc (5/16): There's a reason this is the king, why it won VGMC1, why nothing has been able to compete with it since. (TOC1 finals notwithstanding.) You might like other songs ahead of Scars. You might not consider it the consummate VGM track of all time. But you can't tell me it's bad. You can't tell me you dislike it, that it fails on any level, or that it comes up short in a way that's going to render it low on your list. Nobody can. It's going to win this ranking overall, and everyone knows it. This write-up is ceremonial at best. dowolf (5/16): I still know the poem that goes with the first half of the song by heart. 'Nuff said. hb (5/16): Yeah, this one won the first VGMC for a damn good reason, and I suspect its popularity hasnt waned in the slightest. Theres really not much to say here, sometimes the obvious picks are that for a really damn good reason. rwlh (2/16): 10/10 #28 tags: haunting, adventurous Theres something about this song that keeps us coming back, year in and year out. I have no doubt that if there wasnt a rule about retired songs, Scars of Time would have multiple championships to its name. Its as close to a perfect song as Ive heard VGM produce. Its so easy to get lost in its embrace. This is a song that is pardon the pun timeless. ... Copied to Clipboard! |
