See, the problem is that people don't understand how the economy or government works, so all they see is the economy going in the shitter while a Democrat is office and make the connection that Democrat policies are fucking up the economy.

What they don't seem to realize is that it actually takes time for policies to take effect and that we won't truly see the economic/social impacts that a president has had until they're out of office.

This is exactly what allows Republicans to take credit for shit they didn't do and how Republicans are able to market themselves as the fiscally responsible party, despite historically being godawful at it.
