Goku does not pilot the ship himself. He mashed buttons and the autopilot took him to Yardrat when he was trying to get home, then he decided to stay to train. Thank goodness those Yardratians can read and helped Goku get home.

And true you don't need to be a genius to decipher the controls, but it certainly does help. So why go to Dr. Brief for that when you have the far more intelligent Bulma sitting right there ready and willing to help.

Damn what an amazing pilot. She flew an alien ship across the galaxy and got it and it's occupants safely to another planet without a single hiccup. You can't even buy that level of competence and professionalism. Thank Kami for Bulma.

It makes no difference if Gohan sits on his lap, other than that they would saved time and gotten to Namek sooner, before Freeza's men got there even.

And how would they find the balls, by using Bulma's dragon radar? Goddamn Bulma is amazing! Her genius keeps on saving the day over and over again.
