Shortly after, her family cat (to whom she had since she was young) died and she was heartbroken. Complete opportunity to take the moment, comfort her, and be there in this time of emotional need. Complete moment to shine and show how much he cares and help her seek closure. He just took it as a chance to try to have sex with her.
