This but only when I worked for other people who did not pay or treat me fairly. I decided very early on in my working life that I break my back for no one. Having a "good work ethic" is a neon sign for someone to take advantage and I won't tolerate that.

Being self-employed and working directly with customers is a different, much better story though. I actually enjoy doing thorough and competent work when it's mostly on my terms. The shittiest customer I've dealt with has been infinitely better than the best boss/manager I've had, especially because I've never had to crawl back to a customer I didn't like and kiss their ass.
