Wouldn't it be fair to say that if they were really the best, they should have adapted to their opponent moves instead of following a pre-planned moveset that didnt work out? Regardless of cheating, playing chess should be about reading opponent moves and not just following a recipe. I could be wrong as I dont play chess and maybe following recipes is what makes you the best. This is the inevitability of getting to the top of the meta of any deep enough game, really. It becomes a wholly different thing than the original intent of the design, just by following the rules to their logical conclusions. Additionally, the specific "memorizing lines" thing is also inevitable. If you play a game enough, you recognize the inevitable exchanges.
