| Topic | Is it bad to have conservative friends? |
| Patchwork 09/12/22 8:07:23 PM #115: | TheLiarParadox posted... Can you do a podcast of you and your communist friends discussing the abolition of the police force? I wouldnt call my leftmost friend communist, but I also dont find most people who call themselves communist to be very serious people. My most left-leaning friend has been a friend of mine since childhood. Grew up in the same shitty neighborhood, had similar traumas as kids, etc. He went hardcore into the party scene when we were in our late teens, early 20s and experimented with a plethora of drugs in college. We stayed in contact, went to parties together, crashed at each others apartments. My family was ruined by heroin, so he was respectful enough to keep his use away from me and though I tried to steer him from what he was doing, he found his own way. He works in NYC at a marketing firm now, is very anti police, supports ending the drug war and legalizing all currently-controlled substances, and was a rabid supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement and all it encompassed. Plus, hes anti-gun. Which I am very much.. not. Weve had those conversations a million times over, and will continue to do so; he doesnt hate me because of what I do, and I dont hate him because he wants to abolish my profession. Hes my boy. I love him. I think hes naive, and he thinks Ive been hoodwinked by the state into feeding into the mass incarceration of minorities. Were as far apart politically as possible. He was just at my house warming party this year, surrounded by cops and cop wives, and he and I ran the table in beer pong. His experiences shaped his reality in a different way than mine. Doesnt mean I care about him any less, or that Ill avoid him or not invite him places or stop associating with him. --- The mind is its own place, and in itself Can make a heav'n of hell, a hell of heav'n. ...
