At that point he was just a vessel for Black Zetsu and Kaguya. But I will cede the point that the version of Madara that existed before he was basically destroyed by Zetsu/Kaguya was damned strong, stronger than the First. I'm confused why you're arguing that. Black zetsu tricked him and everything sure, but he literally made all the progress when he was alive at first up to the rinnegan.
