I don't know if 'lovebird syndrome' is any kind of officially or unofficially-accepted medical phenomenon, but I see it all the time. As was already pointed out, Elizabeth started going downhill after Philip died. Stan Lee didn't last more than a year after his wife passed, iirc. Even my own grandmother went downhill and passed within months of my grandfather, despite the fact that - due to his Alzheimer's and needing to be in a rest home - she'd barely seen him in his last few years.

When a person gets to that age and loses the spouse they've spent most of their life with, they simply lose the will to go on living.
