They aren't all the same but I worked one place with "unlimited" PTO and it sucked. After a certain number of days, any more than that had to get approved at C/VP level, so it just felt like having limited PTO. Except the downside is it was use it or lose it, so you don't roll over and you don't get paid any of it out when you terminate employment. I think there have been a lot of studies that unlimited PTO is usually actually done for the benefit of the employer
yeah it just sounds like a way not to have a stored value so that at any given time the company doesn't owe the employee anything. and then they can judge you as they see fit for requesting some.
