You have to find a balance. You can't just expect a population to just give in to relinquishing all important aspects of a society to the government. Yes, people deserve housing, free schools, water, food, clothing, etc, but corruption still exists, and putting that all in the hand of the government can backfire. With the free market, people can at least say "Nah, I don't like that company" and look elsewhere. When its the government, you take it or leave it.
