Also, the goal of the War on Terror wasn't to destroy a military, it was to transform the Middle East into something more democratic. It didn't work quite so well.

We absolutely, unequivocally demolished Iraq's military in a week. It wasn't even a fair fight.

In a straight up peer to peer, clearly defined enemy, war, the US will win every time.

It'd devolve into terrorists running guerilla style attacks but here's the thing about fighting in America:

The government would just have to get a running list of enemy combatants, send these enemies of state to big businesses (who wouldn't dare want to be banned from US operations for aiding and abetting enemies of the state) and then whenever those people wind up going anywhere, they'll get facial recognitioned and the government just has to send in Special Forces to deal with them.

It won't be nearly the same war as the war on terror. And the more terroristic actions the 'patriots' take against American troops or innocent Americans, the less support they'll get.
