She displayed the ability to bend more than one element when she was four, but the opening episode is literally her completing her firebending mastery thirteen years later. "Bu-bu-but she learns airbending in one scene!" It's pretty blatant that her inability to airbend is more a mental block than anything else and the scene she gets over it has her performing the very complex master airbender technique of uh....punching air at Amon.
