They lived on society's fringes or otherwise defied societal expectations. It goes without saying they were overwhelmingly women, but of course, not exclusively. Throw in a strict social hierarchy, social animus, and some ergot, and you've got nasty social violence. Edit: The point is that that social hierarchy didn't win. It couldn't contain us. Not forever.
