They last long but I found the caterpillar 2 years ago and I knew exactly what it was as soon as I spotted it (and the tree was like 50 ft tall so the fact that it was low enough for me to instantly see was a damn miracle basically lol). After that, I just climbed up and cut down the branch and I took care of it for the next few weeks. It emerged last year (moth pic was not me, courtesy of parents. I left it with them because they had a screened in porch and I did have such a safe area for it to winter over).
